Coat Back Off

Half the room already found their jackets
Someone's tying shoes against the wall
Friend says, “If we leave right now, we're smart”

Nobody here looks very smart

Guy from upstairs finally found his people
Girl beside him already changed her mind
I get one sleeve on, hear that chord appear

Everybody looks up

Here we go

You had the coat back on
You had one foot gone

Then that thing moved

COAT BACK OFF

Don't blame me
I was leaving too

One more hit

COAT BACK OFF

Now there are jackets hanging everywhere
Same tired people suddenly look useful
One guy dances holding both his sleeves
Friend takes them and keeps moving behind him

Nobody promised another full hour
Nobody even made a real decision
The chord did less talking than all of us

Apparently that was enough

I try the stairs for a second attempt
Crowd behind me starts making that sound
They hear the organ before I turn around

I already know

Coat back -

No.

You know it.

COAT BACK OFF

I had my coat back on
I had both feet gone

Then they start-

COAT BACK OFF

That's not me
That's everybody else

I say “I'm done”

COAT BACK OFF

I point outside
They shake their heads

I try again

COAT BACK OFF

Fine.
Take it.
